Homework & Projects:
DUE DATES MUST BE MET for all assignments. The expectations for Middle School is that the students keep up with their assignments, complete them, and turn them in on time. It is important that they develop these skills this year. They should be checking their own scores on the parent portal for grades.
1. Independent Reading - Grade 5 students should be reading 35 minutes daily or 245 minutes weekly at home. They need to read non-fiction as the assessments are based on non-fiction texts.
2. Any Reading assignment or Social Studies assignment that is not completed in class should be finished at home for homework the same night. If your child is not writing down the assignments they did not finish, remind them it is their responsibility to note the reading assignments and social studies assignments they did not finish on their planner page.
3. To check if a book is an AR book at the public library, you can go to the following website:
ACCCELERATED READER AND PUBLIC LIBRARY:
"Your Public Library has an Accelerated Reader search engine found
on: http://www.leoncountylibrary.org/library/site-index.asp
Once you open the above link and on the main library page, click on
“Search Library Catalog” located on the left side of the page. Next, click
on the “Accelerated Reader/ Lexile tab” to begin your search and
customize to your child’s AR level.
Homework and Classwork Policies for Grade 5:
Completion of homework and classwork on time is important. It helps the students to develop responsibility and homework supports the practice for the work done in the classroom. Only the graded work turned in on time will receive full credit. A student may turn in their work the next day after the work was due but there will be a 10% - 20% reduction in the score depending on how many days late it was turned in.
Work that is not turned in receives a score of "Z" in PinPointe (the grade book) which enters into their grade average as a zero. If you see a "Z" and your child does not know or remember the assignment, please check with your child's teacher. A "Z" indicates a missing assignment that was not turned in.
The students should be reading 245 minutes weekly and taking AR tests. They may choose how to complete their 245 minutes each week. For example, they may read 35 minutes a day for 7 days or read more minutes in less days.
Each student is required to maintain their agenda. The student is responsible for copying all homework and project assignments into their agendas daily. All grade 5 teachers have the homework posted on the white boards in the classrooms. The agenda becomes more important as they move forward to middle school and high school. It is important to develop good organizational habits early. The consequences for not keeping up with your assignments and writing them down in an agenda become greater as the students move forward in their education careers.
